April Challenge – Day 7 – Rainbow

Wow, we’re at day 7 already ! Today’s theme is rainbow.

Since Rainbows are all about light, I went for an easy way out :) I put on some Sephora Nail Patches in Pearl White – they are lovely and translucent – and studded them with diamanté in different colours – I had 6 out of 7 colours, that should do!

It’s a shame I could never get away with this mani at work, I was pretty sad to have to take it off.

Swatch – Sephora – Retro Chic (L45)

Brown isn’t always an easy colour to find. But with all of the choice at Sephora, there were a couple that caught my eye.

This time it’s Retro Chic‘s turn to be swatched !

Retro Chic is a lovely rich, warm brown, but unfortunately separates a bit in the bottle. Here you can’t really see it, but there is a strange orangey liquid that floats about a bit. And is it just me or are smaller bottles harder to mix up again?

It dries – as is often the case – a bit darker than in the bottle (actually, a lot darker!) but goes on silky smooth, and just one coat is perfect ! So it dries fairly quickly too.

Overall a nice, staple brown that is easy to wear and quick to apply – very handy !

Swatch – Sephora (Couleur Multi-Action) – Brownie (No 9)

This is an old range, still available in a few Sephora shops, but I’m under the impression that the Expert Manicure range has been brought in to replace this “multi-action colour” range.

I bought it a while ago in Brownie, as browns are one of those colours that I love to wear but can be hard to find. Brownie is a lovely deep, rich, chocolate brown (as you’d expect from the name) :

The new range has a lovely brush. This one really doesn’t !

The consistency was really gloopy, to be fair I have had this bottle a while, but as it has never been opened, I don’t think that should make much difference; especially for a premium range.

The colour is quite nice, and two coats is enough :

But after just one day, this colour was flaking off my nails; it also felt like it really dried them out, and I broke two nails! Since I have silks that I maintain regularly, I never usually break nails.

Needless to say, even though the colour is very pretty, I’m not touching this varnish again ! Thank goodness that the new range is better…

Swatch – Sephora – My Favourite Jeans (L14)

Here’s a sale bargain for the weekend! Sephora – My Favourite Jeans (L14) :

image

This is a stunning inky blue, so blue that it’s almost black!

Application was a bit of a pain, but after just one coat I have near-opaque coverage :

The formula is fine to work with, not too thick, not too thin, but takes a bit of work to get it even. The finish is shiny but not glossy, and the colour is gorgeous! A casual glance would suggest a black polish, but a closer look reveals a deep, cool blue, like a perfect starry sky.

Drying time was average – 10mns to touch-dry and 20mns for completely dry.

The only problem is that I can’t decide what to do worth it! Do I crackle, add a foil tip, ombre into black or even glitter it up?!

The only dark blue varnish that I’ve had before stained horribly, so watch the space for news on the removal…

—update—

After 3 days wear, this came off without staining at all – not bad!

Swatch – Sephora – Teeny Bikini (L29)

Here’s a Wednesday morning post from the train. I finally got my Sephora delivery (that I ordered at the beginning of the month, to make the most of sales prices). It actually took a week longer than a delivery that I ordered from Japan!

So here is a swatch post for Sephora – Teeny Bikini (L29)

I really like Sephora’s little bottles, but after having tried a few, I find the 5€ price tag a bit steep. This colour has turned out to be pretty typical of what I have come to expect from Sephora.

1st coat- pretty patchy, the formula is thick and sort of didn’t want to “stick” to my base coat.

This photo was taken indoors at night, but the colour matches pretty well. I was pretty sure that these varnishes are supposed to be fast-dry, but this first coat was no faster than average.

A second coat is enough for pretty good opacity :

Because of the thick formula, it’s hard not to get a streaky finish with this minty green creme.

It’s an okay colour for the summer, but I think I would prefer it either a shade darker, to make it pop, our a shade lighter, to make it look really creamy. The finish is a classic creme, shiny but not especially glossy.

But the thing that has ready annoyed me about this colour is that it bubbles as it (slowly) dries! When I applied it, it was perfectly smooth, but here’s a photo taken in the sunlight this morning:

This really annoys me, especially in a brand new polish. I will thin it down, and hopefully that will stop it, but I feel like I have ugly nails today!

It’s a shame that I often experience this sort of thing with Sephora varnishes, especially given the price you pay for a tiny bottle (5 ml), which works out at almost a Euro per millilitre. The only upside to the range is the huge choice of colours!
